Visually-impaired people in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, will be able to watch movies as the Sonar Barrie-Free Film Project proceeds as planned, according to officials at a signing ceremony for the project in Hangzhou on Nov 30.

Differently-abled residents and government authorities from 13 districts and counties in Hangzhou assembled at the signing ceremony, agreeing to enhance cooperation to develop the project, helping more visually-impaired people get access to films.

Barrier-free films enable the visually- and hearing-impaired to enjoy the same movies as other movie goers. Through subtitles and dubbing, they can share the experience of watching movies in the theatre.

This year, Hangzhou organized 15 teams specializing in explaining and detailing plots of movies to visually impaired people.

By November, Hangzhou had held four training sessions to teach volunteers skills to interpret the barrier-free films. It has also organized 177 differently-abled people to enjoy movies.

Yang Yingying, president of the council of the Hangzhou Federation for Disabled People, said that the signing marked a new page for the development of barrier-free films in Hangzhou.
